Christopher selected as Scout Executive/CEO Minimize

travis.JPG

On behalf of the Hawkeye Area Council Search Committee, I am pleased to announce Travis Christopher has accepted the position as Scout Executive/CEO for Hawkeye Area Council. He will start July 1, 2009.

Travis will join us from his current position as Director of Field Service in the Bay Lakes Council in Appleton, Wisconsin. He and his wife Jennifer and their three children, including an upcoming Webelos, will be moving to the area soon.

We welcome Travis's enthusiasm for Scouting and the energetic attitude with which we know he will lead our Council forward.

In reflecting upon his interview experience, Travis shared the following thoughts, "The more I reviewed the many opportunities in Hawkeye Area Council, the more excited I got about joining this team. July 1 can't come soon enough for me!"

My thanks go to the dedicated members of the Search Committee who worked hard to ensure the best fit was found for Hawkeye Area Council.  I also appreciate the work lead by Jim Wood, Vice President of Program, to ensure a seamless process for integrating Travis into our Council. More information will be coming soon.

Eagle Strike Force Service Info Available

Project Eagle Strike Force is an Advancement Committee effort to gather information on ongoing flood recovery Eagle and service project opportunities. The same absolute responsibility of the Scout to lead all aspects of the Eagle project remains.

The organized info contains three different types of details:

  1. Current potential Eagle projects that have been reported to the Council office
  2. Ongoing contacts at flood-impacted non-profits and public entities who are happy to take calls from Scouts interested in discussing potential projects.
  3. Potential unit service projects that are flood-related.

For Eagle candidates who undertake flood-related Eagle projects, a matching funds program is available for up to 50% your supply costs. The same approvals, etc. of Eagle projects are still required. Click on the link below for an application. Submit your completed application to the Advancement Committee.

United Way Funding Cut Minimize

United Way of East Central Iowa Awards $35,000 Transition/Capacity Building Grant to Boy Scouts, $81,500 Funding Gap Remains From Previous Cuts

In the spring of 2008, the United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI) reduced funding to Hawkeye Area Council by $116,500 annually, a 54% reduction in their previous allocation. This represented an 8.1% reduction in our operating income. The full effect of the reduction begins January 1, 2009 with the start of the reduced funding budget year. Even with recent improvement, an annual funding gap of $81,500 remains due to the spring United Way allocation reduction.

UWECI made available Transition/Capacity Building grants to organizations that received funding cuts. Hawkeye Area Council was eligible to apply for up to $57,000 from this fund. Recognizing the substantial flooding impact on many non-profits, the Council United Way Task Force voted to request $35,000 from this fund and asked United Way to allocate the balance to their Flood Relief Fund. On August 19, 2008, UWECI awarded the full Hawkeye Area Council Transition/Capacity Building grant request of $35,000. This amount will be distributed starting in January 2009 and reduces the overall UWECI budget reduction to 6% of our annual operating income.

The United Way maintains its policy of accepting donor designated gifts. Any donor designated gift will be sent to the donor’s chosen non-profit, minus an administrative fee.  Donor designated gifts are separate from the UWECI agency allocation amounts.

Join Scouting Minimize

Join Cub Scouting!
Having Fun…   Learning New Skills…   Building Character…
More Than Just Another Activity!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

This is your son’s invitation to join the country’s largest youth organization.  He can become a member of the Boy Scouts of America.  Scouting is fun-filled, educational, and a program with a purpose.  Scouting helps develop boys’ values of duty to God, Country, and others.  Scouting’s aims of character building, citizenship training and fitness have remained unchanged since the program began in 1910.  Boys have fun and at the same time they develop leadership skills by serving as boy leaders.

The Boy Scouts of America has a program for your son:

TIGER CUBS is for boys in the first grade.  The program focuses on activities for a parent-boy team from each family; each boy must have a parent partner.  They meet monthly in one of the boy’s homes and follow a pre-selected theme of their own choosing.

CUB SCOUTING is for boys in the 2nd, 3rd grades.  Cub Scouts have a Den Meeting each week, usually in the Den Leader’s home.  Once a month, all of the dens in the Cub Scout Pack come together for a Pack Meeting where they see exhibits and displays, have skits, ceremonies, and songs, and receive their awards and badges.  Cub Scouting is a family and neighborhood centered program.  4th and 5th graders join the excitement of WEBELOS, and work to become prepared to join the adventures of Boy Scouts during the spring of their 5th grade year.
